Now that the dust has settled…

RIP Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. Sorry for being late. Star Wars is fucking awesome asides from Jar Jar Binks. Mrs. Reynolds was gorgeous in Singin’ In The Rain and the coolest motherfucking grandma ever. Excuse for my cursing, grandma, I just can’t hold it anymore :(. Rest In Peace, both of you.

Seriously…Fuck 2016 in the ass.

Long time no see

It’s funny I said that because that’s exactly how grammar works here in Vietnam and most Southeast Asian countries: It doesn’t. We just spew shit however we like and still understand each other perfectly (sometimes, even a little too perfect and that can lead to annoyance). But yes, I haven’t written anything for a while, and something in me tells that I should make an awesome post before Christmas/New Year’s Eve approaches. I’ve always adored Christmas since I was tiny, and in most cases I much prefer Christmas to Lunar New Year since Santa is way cuter and way more like a fairy tale than boring dragons and crap. The reason I just compared Christmas to Lunar New Year is that, as a person who grew up in a heavily Eastern-influenced country, as well as the one who was extremely “adulterated” by the Western culture through books and films and TV Shows, I just couldn’t help but find so many similarities between the two festivals.

Money >< Presents

During Christmas, most kids get presents that Santa drops next to the tree right before he drinks the milk and eats the cookie. Which after hitting a certain age, most healthy kids learn that Santa turns out to be dad shamelessly not in any Santa costume, and the milk and cookies are consumed by mom. Well in the East we just straight up give kids money. It used to be pennies and the like, but the adults just went lazy and now we get red envelopes that have money in them, which after the dust has settled are mostly taken by the parents. My parents didn’t because they were cool people.

Family Gatherings

During Christmas/, family gatherings are important. The trope that one has to get back to their family at all cost, has throughout the year made hilarious appearances in pop culture. And yes I’m referring to Steve Martin in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles even though the movie is about Thanksgiving. We do that kind of shit on Lunar too. We meet relatives, play board games, do all kind of shit ’til dawn.

Food

The best thing that both festivals share. We’ve got chicken, ham, salad, homemade pumpkin pie on Christmas. We’ve got duck, rice cake, rice balls, turnip cake on Lunar. A win-win situation.

Breaks

We’ve got a Winter break during Christmas. We’ve also got a break during Lunar, also. More time to lie around and be overall a lazy sack of shit.

So that’s it for today. It’s great to be back.
